How to Do a Barbell Squat? What muscle does it works?

How to Do a Barbell Squat?

Start with your feet shoulder-width apart. Your feet can be either flat or slightly turned outwards.

When placing the barbell on your shoulders, it should rest just below your neck, on your trapezius muscles. Your hands should grip the barbell wider than shoulder-width.

Begin the squat by pushing your hips back as if you are about to sit in a chair. Avoid moving your head during the movement. Your spine should remain in a neutral position.

Try to squat as deep as you can while maintaining control of the movement. Push yourself upwards through the soles of your feet to return to the starting position.

Which muscle groups are targeted?

  • Gluteus Maximus (Glutes)
  • Quadriceps
